Privacy Policy

Burgerater ("we", "us"), made by ioloro, helps you rate food, capture menus, and discover great bites. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions? Email [email protected].
Information we collect
- Account. Burgerater uses Sign in with Apple. Before you sign in, we create an anonymous session identified by a random token, with no personal information. When you sign in, we receive the email you share (which may be an Apple private-relay address) and, on first sign-in, your name if you provide it. Sign-in is required to rate and share.
- Content you create. Ratings, scores, notes, the food photos you attach, menu photos and items you capture, and the places or venues you tag.
- Location. With your permission, we use your approximate location to tag where you ate and to detect nearby restaurants. If you choose to share a rating, its coarse coordinates may be attached to it.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications, your device's push token, so we can tell you when a menu you added goes live or a new top-rated spot appears near where you've rated food.
- Diagnostics. Crash and performance data to keep the app working, via Sentry. This does not include your photos or email.
Food and menu photos
Sharing photos is part of how Burgerater works. Food photos you attach to a rating are uploaded to our servers and posted with that rating, and menu photos you capture are uploaded so the venue's menu can be shared. We also use these photos to improve how the app recognizes food and reads menus.
Ingredient detection, menu text recognition, and AI rating suggestions run on your device using Apple frameworks; that analysis happens before anything is uploaded.
Menu captures. When you capture a venue's menu, your phone reads it on-device first. It then uploads the menu photos, the recognized text, and the structured menu (including any edits you make) to our servers in the background. We keep them as the history of that venue's menu and use them to improve menu reading. Please photograph only the menu, not people.
How we use information
To provide and improve the app: save and sync your ratings, power photo and restaurant detection, run the community feed and menu discovery, award achievements, send the notifications you allow, and improve food and menu recognition. We do not sell your personal information.
What's shared
Your ratings, with their photos, appear in the community feed to other users while your profile is public. If you make your profile private, your ratings are visible only to you, but their photos are still stored on our servers and may be used to improve food recognition. Menu photos and items you capture are shared so others can discover a venue by what it serves.
Service providers
We use DigitalOcean for hosting and photo storage, Apple for Sign in with Apple and push notifications, and Sentry for error monitoring. They process data only to provide these services.
Your choices & rights
- Make your profile public or private at any time.
- Report or block other users; we review reports and remove violations.
- Delete individual ratings, or delete your account in Settings. Deleting your account removes your profile, email, Sign in with Apple connection, and notification tokens. Ratings, their photos, and menus you've shared stay on Burgerater, no longer connected to you: they appear as from a "Former member" (or stay hidden if your profile was private).
- Turn notifications off in iOS Settings at any time.
- Turn location off in iOS Settings; the app still works without it.
Data retention
We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your profile and the personal information tied to it. Ratings, photos, and menus you shared are kept without any link to you, and may continue to appear in the app and be used to improve food and menu recognition. To have a specific rating removed first, delete it before deleting your account.
Children
Burgerater is intended for users 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Changes
We may update this policy; we'll revise the date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app.
